Introduction:
Today’s students are adept at multitasking. They can talk on the cell phone, play computer video games, blog, surf the Internet, instant message, text message and listen to music simultaneously. However, upon entering the school walls, none or few of these activities are used in the classroom. “Digital Natives" are used to receiving information really fast. They like to parallel process and multi-task. They prefer their graphics before their text rather than the opposite. They prefer random access (like hypertext). They function best when networked. They thrive on instant gratification and frequent rewards. They prefer games to “serious” work” (Prensky, 2001, p. 2). Even knowing this, very few teachers incorporate this into their instruction and student learning. Not because they don’t want to, but because they don’t know how.
Georgia Avenue Elementary, Vance Middle School, and Booker T. Washington High School will be the first schools involved in this district wide initiative.
Goal: To create technologically proficient students who apply technology tools daily in a meaningful way to learn, collaborate, communicate, and create.
