Technology Integration Activity 1
(Wiki, Delicious, NetTrekker, Google Docs)
Objective: 2 partners will work collaboratively (each partner on his/her own computer) to create Google Docs presentation containing 5 slides. The presentation will be shared with mcstechteam@gmail.com This activity incorporates the use of 4 technology tools: Wiki, Delicious, netTrekker, and Google Docs.
Note To Participants: Please use the same computer for the duration of this activity. There should be a number on the bottom of the laptop. It may be helpful to write down that number so that you will know which computer to use.
Each partner will complete the following steps:
1. Create a folder on your desktop by going the the "File" menu and choosing "New Folder." Name your folder with your last name. This is where you will save the images you find on the Internet.
2. Open the Internet.
Mac: Use Safari or Firefox as your Internet browser.
PC: Use Internet Explorer or Firefox as your Internet browser
If you haven't created an account, create one now and install the buttons on your browser. If you don't have "installation rights" on your school computer, follow the instructions here:
This bookmarklet will perform the same function as the Delicious buttons; it will allow you to save and tag any websites you find.
4. Open another tab or window and go to the TLA page. Here's how ---
Safari: Go to File, click on New Tab
Internet Explorer: Go to File, click on New Tab
Firefox: Go to 'File' then click on 'New Tab'
6. Find your grade level (elementary, middle, or high). Click on the tab. Tabs are colored coded for grade levels.
7. Look on the right hand side inside the Features box. Click on Famous Person link to conduct a search. Use these criteria.
Name (leave blank)
Gender: (choose one)
Time Period: (choose up to three)
Occupation: (choose up to three)
Ethnic/ Cultural Heritage: (choose up to three)
8. From the list that is generated, choose a person who has a Timeline icon
after his/her name. (You will come back to the Timeline later.)
9. Click on the name to see a listing of relevant websites.
10. Click on and view a few websites for your chosen person. Tag (using Delicious) the ones you would want your students to use.
11. Do an Image Search in NetTrekker for pictures of your famous person.
12. Save an image of the person to your folder on your desktop.
13. Open another tab or window and go to your Gmail account.
If you haven't created a Gmail account (which allows you to use Google Docs), create one now by going to Google and clicking on the Gmail link at the top of the page.
Partner #1---
1. Create a new Google Docs presentation and rename it with a unique name, containing school name and partners' last names
Example--- BTW: Jones and Harris
2. Share the presentation with Partner #2 using that person's Gmail account (sharing allows collaboration between the partners).
Both Partners may now work collaboratively on the following steps:
1. Work together to create a Google Docs Presentation consisting of 5 slides---
Slide 1: Title slide, containing these elements:
Names of the two famous persons
School name
Partners' names
Slides 2 & 3: Each partner creates one slide for his/her famous person, containing these elements:
Famous person's name
1 picture of famous person (resize as needed)
1 fact about famous person
Link to Delicious bookmarks for that famous person
Slides 4 &5: Using NetTrekker's Timeline feature, each partner creates one slide for his/her famous person, containing:
Names of 3 contemporaries of the famous person
3 innovations/discoveries in that person's lifetime
(Remember that you can change the background or theme under "Edit.")
