Social Studies: 8th grade History- Revolution and the New Nation
The class is beginning a study on the American Revolution. (This is a whole class discussion and lecture.)
Ask:
- What do you know about the American Revolution?
- Who were the major players in the American Revolution?
- What were the causes?
- What was the result of the revolution?
As a class we will build a KWL chart together; ( allow 10 minutes of discussion; add more as needed)
With limited background knowledge, filling in the chart may be difficult so I'll bring in a clip from Discovery Streaming to help them get started. American Revolution.docx
The American Revolution: From Colonies to Constitution: The War for Independence
The first clip at this link is 48 seconds. Then begin brainstorming.

Divide students into pairs. Post chart paper around the room for each pair for them to what they think they now need to know to answer the big questions. Allow students about 15 minutes to work together on the W section and report back to the class.
The L column will be completed later in the study.
